Martha's Vineyard

I had a lot of firsts this year and what makes them so special is that I had a chance to experience them with my boyfriend (Adam), who means the world to me. We had the opportunity to go to Martha’s Vineyard this summer with Myoshi and some of her friends. To be honest, I had no idea what to expect. Just trying to wrap my mind around how we were physically going to get there was enough to have me googling everything about Martha’s Vineyard lol.

We had to book rental cars and, if you know me and Myoshi, we have the worst experience renting cars lol And it sucks to say that we did have some trouble renting a car for this trip as well. It was due to Covid like everything else this year, but we figured it out. I think the toughest part about putting this trip together was just the timing and coordination. To get to Martha’s Vineyard, you have to drive to Massachusetts, for us that’s about a 4.5-5 hour drive. From there, you need to park the car in a lot, get on a shuttle, and then buy a ticket to jump on the ferry. The ferry ride itself is about 40 mins which wasn’t bad because it goes by so fast.

On the Ferry ride

Myoshi’s grandmother has a house in Martha’s Vineyard that she lets the family use whenever they want to get away, so that’s where we went as soon as we got off the ferry. This was just a weekend trip. We left Friday night, spent the entire Saturday there and then came back around Sunday mid-afternoon. The crazy part is that the trip felt longer than that because we tried to fit in as many things as possible. When we arrived to the house, we settled into the different rooms and unpacked a bit.

But we got straight to it because it was already “shot o’clock” at like 7:00am. 😂We had shots and smoked hookah. As we were doing that, we changed into swimwear and shorts because after all this was August and it was extremely hot and sunny outside. The whole summer I can count the amount of times I went to the shore, so this was nice to be able to go to the beach, tan and get in some water before Fall season starts. After about an hour of just laying out in the sun and swimming, we decided to rent some jet skis. This was so exciting because it was Adam’s first time being on a jet ski. I was actually pretty nervous because he was the driver and I was on the back and I felt like I was going to fly off. I just kept my eyes and mouth closed because that salt water is no joke. I also think the water had jellyfish in it so I was afraid to get stung. Oh and do you know how hard it is to get back on a jet ski once you fall off in the middle of the water!? It’s close to impossible and I wasn’t about to try it.

We had lots of fun and even had a chance to use my GoPro and chest strap to get some footage riding the jet ski in the water. After we all finished with the jet skis, we caught an Uber back to the house and changed our clothes so we could get some food. Of course while at Martha’s Vineyard, they have lots of seafood options available. Most of us ordered: steamed crabs, shrimp, fish and chips, clams. etc.

After we ate, we went back to the house to play some games and drink a bit. I mean there isn’t really a nightlife scene, if anything they have some bars, but we had enough beers and liquor back at the house so that was the mood for the night. And plus it was still the longest day ever, we were up since Friday at 11pm until Saturday night. That’s 24 hours awake without taking a second to lay down.

Oaks Bluff

On that Sunday, which was our last day there, we headed back to the beach which is in Oaks Bluff and we explored some of the shops. It was a very nice area and reminded me of an outdoor mall with cute boutiques and places to eat. In the shops, you could purchase hoodies, hats, shirts, tote bags, etc. with the Martha’s Vineyard logo. We also had a chance to eat some lunch there as well before laying back in the sand. As I mentioned earlier, we were only there for a day a half so we tried to get as much beach time as possible. Eventually we went back to the house, so we could pack our things and clean up before catching the ferry and start the drive back home.

Overall, I think Martha’s Vineyard is definitely a summer getaway vibe. You can easily spend a week there to really just relax and remove yourself from the fast pace city life. I believe you can also use Airbnb to find a place to stay out there, but we were lucky that Myoshi’s grandmother already has a house. Even with Covid, a lot of things were still open. The main thing that was restricted were that some restaurants only had takeout but everything else was pretty much open. If we had more time on the island, we probably would have rented a boat but there’s always next year. Hopefully by then we can carve out more time to stay for an extended weekend.
